Maiden Factor docks in Cape Town as part of global tour to empower girls through education

6 February 2023

Imperial, a DP World Company, was honoured to support the DP World-sponsored Maiden Factor visit to Cape Town during January 2023. The crew were welcomed at the Victoria & Alfred Marina by members of the public and colleagues from Imperial’s operations in the Western Cape.

The 58ft yacht Maiden has had a historic past. Skippered by Tracy Edwards MBE in the 89/90 Whitbread ‘Round the World’ race with the first ever all-female crew, they broke through the discrimination and gender-based obstacles, proving all their critics wrong and finished 2nd in their class. Today, Maiden is again crewed by an all-female team, continuing the work that Tracy started over 30 years ago.

This inspiring all-female yacht crew have embarked on a three-year world tour as global ambassadors for the empowerment of girls through education in Science, Technology, Engineering, the Arts and Maths (STEAM). In communities near each port they visit, the Maiden Factor builds awareness and raises funds in support of this objective. Three young South African women joined the crew for the Dakar to Cape Town leg of their journey.

During the 21 day stopover in Cape Town, the crew engaged with hundreds of school children and young women, raised funds for educational projects to inspire and empower girls and donated sanitary products to a high school so that girls in need don’t have to miss school when menstruating. With gender diversity and equality being of paramount importance to us at  Imperial, we are honoured to have played a part in the crew’s important global mission. We wish the Maiden Factor crew a safe and impactful journey on the rest of their world tour.
